A classroom backchannel
Brookfield talks of a website called TodaysMeet in his book The Skillful Teacher which caught my eye. He describes it as an area where students can throw out thoughts, ideas, and questions as they occur to them. How he describes his use case, I assume he has students post up in the room as the lesson is happening. While I generally frown on the idea of phones/laptops being used during a lesson, I can definitely see the advantages here if the technology is being used productively.
What I had envisioned was an area where students could anonymously post up their thoughts and questions. As the room is available to all students, a few possible scenarios come to mind.
- Any student could post what they wanted more information or clarification on
- Students would be able to help each other out to come up with an answer or solution collaboratively
- Students would almost unanimously agree they too were not clear on the idea
I could chose to either review the chat in real time, or have a quick scan during pauses to see where the students had really needed the extra information
Unfortunately TodaysMeet is no longer running, but I’ve started to explore some other options, and one that I think I’ll try when my class resumes is https://www.gosoapbox.com/.
